Luke Price's life has always been about order, control, and acting tough on the outside. For Luke, meaningless relationships are a distraction - a way to tune out the twisted memories of his childhood. He desperately wishes he could forget his past, but it haunts him no matter what he does.
Violet Hayes has had a rough life. When she was young, she was left with no family and the memory of her parents' unsolved murders. She grew up in foster homes, living with irresponsible parents, drugs, and neglect, and trying to fight the painful memories of the night her parents were taken from her. But it's hard to forget when she never got closure - and she can't stop dreaming about what happened that tragic night. To make it through life, she keeps her distance from everyone and never allows herself to feel anything.
Then Violet meets Luke. The two clash instantly, yet they can't seem to stay away from each other. Although they fight it, they both start to open up and feel things they've never felt before. They discover just how similar they are. But they also discover something else: The past always catches up with you.
This spin off from the Callie and Kayden series was magic and tragic. Being a huge fan of Jessica Sorenson, I was not disappointed with this gut wrenching tale of two damaged souls that find solace with each other when they spend so much time trying to avoid feelings at all. Luke Price, control seeking sexy football player bad boy and closet diabetic, had a traumatic childhood which fuels his need for control. He controls his emotions with drinking and women, not caring how either may cause more damage. Violet Hayes resident "vixen" and anomaly due to her hidden virgin status and tough girl attitude that stems from a tragedy when she was a young girl. She finds her peace with random acts of adrenaline inducing behaviors and that's how she meets Luke. I have to say that this is one of the most original first encounters that I've read. And I read a lot.
As Violet tries to jump out of a two story window to evade a few large males, she lands a kick to Luke's head. Concerned for her safety and a personal need to know why she jumped out of the window, he can't help himself but pursue this closed off beautiful girl. The title says it all when these two keep bumping into one another and you truly believe that Luke is her destiny, when a wicked twist occurs. All the attributes for a great book! Sexy leading man that grabs your heart. Check! A female character that grips you and make you pull for her. Check! Then an ending that leaves you begging for more! Check! Crazy awesome ending! What I love most about Jessica Sorenson's writing is that she can take a situation so ugly and force you to find the hidden beauty underneath.
The narrators of this audiobook spoke fluently with emotion and I really enjoy the male and female performers. It was easier to listen to Luke POV with the male voice. Mr. Berger gives Luke this calm intense voice and Ms. Goe actually brings an innocence to Violet that is needed to make the performance more believable.
