Marina has loved her best friend, James, since they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America's most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James's life crumbles apart, and with it, Marina's hopes for their future. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it. At least not as the girl she once was. Em and Marina are in a race against time that only one of them can win. All Our Yesterdays is a wrenching, brilliantly plotted story of fierce love, unthinkable sacrifice, and the infinite implications of our every choice.
I wish I could go back in time to experience this book for the first time again. The story is brilliant. Terrill expertly weaves the past, present, and future as the story takes readers on a voyage through time to change the very things that have led the characters to where they are today… the genius of James and the creation of Cassandra – a time machine.
Each character is doubled and you feel for both the young characters and the current ones – 4 years in the future as they battle not only each other, but younger versions of themselves to save the world from the machine which creates much more harm than good.
James is a sensitive and brilliant teenager who is devastated by his parent’s early deaths in a car crash. Wishing he could go back and change such a senseless loss, he focuses with fierce determination and unflagging passion on creating a bridge in the space time continuum which would allow him to save them.
Marina is the girl next store and his best friend growing up. She loves James with a passion and will do anything to protect him. He’s one of the few true friends she has and she cherishes their relationship. Marina, James, and another boy from school, Fin, make up the close-knit crew that will put their lives on the line to save each other.
After months of torture and pain, Em realizes that the only way to protect the future and save the world is to “kill him”. They have tried everything else with no success. The Doctor is cold and ruthless and cruel. She needs to kill him before he turns into the monster he is today. She teams up with an unlikely partner and will need to go back in time and break Marina’s heart to kill the one person she’s sworn she will always protect.
Lines are crossed, bonds are broken, and love shows up in the most unlikely of places. What would you do to protect the ones you love? What would make you betray them?
This novel is refreshing in its originality and cliff-hanger excitement that leaves the reader clinging to every word chapter by chapter. Meredith Mitchell is epic in her performance as narrator giving depth to the myriad of characters and to the emotional fragility of the situations they find themselves in.
This is a book both young and old will enjoy. Clever, heart pounding, exciting, and masterfully done.
