Carolyn Everett is a rising star in the very competitive field of antique selling, working for none other than New York's famous auction house Christie's. Her charmed New York life however, is shaken up when a piece she has recently acquired for sale ends up having questionable authenticity and could have been obtained by illegal means. The gorgeous, self-assured 29 year old crumples under the pressure and disgrace and returns to her home town of Newport, Rhode Island until the dust settles in New York.
Back in Rhode Island, Carolyn reconnects with her childhood friends and returns to her high school job at a small antique store to pass the time. It is during her time there that she encounters a beautiful bowl of uncertain origin that sparks her interest. With her investigative background and knowledge of antiques, she's determined to discover the bowl's history to see if she can sell it for a nice profit for the antique store. In order to do that, she must first find it's last owner.
When Marine Sergeant Tyler Ford enters the store, Carolyn's heart stops. He is even more attractive than the other marine's had warned her he would be. They also warned her to stay far far away from him, for mixing company with Tyler Ford was sure to lead to nothing but disaster and heartache. Just being in his presence is an intoxicating drug and Carolyn can't help but get to know him better and to find out more about the mysterious bowl he once owned. However when Tyler's stories stop adding up and the police get involve, Carolyn realizes she may have gotten in over her head. Can she trust the man who stole her heart? Where did the bowl really come from and at what cost? Should she believe the stories everyone is telling or try to get the truth from the one man who is avoiding her calls? If the bowl is truly an antique it may be her greatest find yet, but it also may cause her greatest devastation.
This is an intriguing romantic mystery with a detailed plot that is only reveled slowly to the reader building suspense. The story starts out a bit slow, but picks up speed once Carolyn meets Tyler. Their romance is passionate and intense and leaves the reader wanting more. The ending was unpredictable, but fitting. Definitely an enjoyable story!
I listened to the audioversion of this novel, narrated by Emily Durante, and really enjoyed it. The narrating was clear and precise. The novel slowed smoothly and was easy to follow. It was an excellent book to listen to.
