When Liz Dougherty’s first reporting assignment for her North Carolina college newspaper finds her covering a state senator’s impromptu press conference, she has no idea how drastically her life is about to change. Senator Brady Maxwell may look the part with his devastating good looks and impeccable style, but his politics rub Liz the wrong way, and she’s not going to let him off easy.
Liz’s hardball question catches Brady off guard and shows her editor, Hayden Lane, that she’s headed places as journalist. But to Liz’s surprise, she’s also headed for a secret, high-stakes romance with Brady Maxwell that could destroy the careers they each hold dear.
Unsatisfied with sneaking around and realizing things with Hayden might not be strictly platonic, Liz faces a difficult decision: Should she take things with Brady to the next level or call the whole thing off? They soon discover that in love, unlike politics, there’s rarely a clear winner.
Natalie Ross narrates this story of a love affair. She's well spoken and words flow. This was my first listen of an audiobook and my first read by K.A. Linde. In the beginning it was hard to grasp someone reading to me but then by chapter 4 when Liz speaks to the senator about airplanes, I was hooked. Brady is charismatic, sexy, and forward. He has a controlling alpha male nature behind his "campaign" face. Liz is a strong willed and driven aspiring reporter, but has a hard time controlling her impulses when it comes to her inexplicable pull to Brady. She's unsure of her feelings for Brady other than lust. She also has a lingering crush on her editor, Hayden.
Liz keeps her goals in mind throughout the whole book, which is nice. Sometimes the typical love story has someone giving up their dreams for someone else. She was never afraid to show her wit, which was amazing that she never compromised herself. Her best friend Victoria complimented her well and made me laugh. Sometimes Victoria would say the things that I would advise my friend in the same situation. She was comic relief when Liz was full of angst and hurt.
Liz's journey was worth reading and kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed this book and the end left me wanting more! I can't wait for the next book in this series!
