When Annie dies on the operating table, she leaves behind three other victims: Alec O'Neill, who thought he had the perfect marriage; Paul, whose fixation on Annie is unshakable; and Olivia, who is desperate to understand the woman who destroyed her marriage. Now they are left with unanswered questions about who Annie really was - and about the secrets she kept hidden so well.
Keeper of the Light is a fantastic journey of love, obsession, forgiveness, and second chances. As the lighthouse beacon turns, all it faces are cast into light, followed by darkness, only to once again be caught in the glorious light of the beacon. The lighthouse is perfect imagery for what the characters in the story are facing.
Olivia and Paul have been happily married for nearly a decade when Olivia takes a job as an emergency room surgeon in the quiet beach town on the Carolina shore. She is drawn to her work with passion, often putting it above her marriage as she called in for emergencies to save lives. When Paul becomes obsessed with a woman he is interviewing for his paper, Olivia prays that it will be just a phase. As his infatuation grows, Olivia wonders if her attentive husband who used to write poetry about her will ever again return his attention to her. Then one Christmas Eve, everything changes. Annie, the objective of Paul's affection, is fatally shot while volunteering at a woman's shelter. Despite Olivia's best efforts, she cannot save Annie. Annie, who the town had declared a saint. Annie who was obsessed over by Olivia's own husband. Annie who was loved and cherished by her children and husband Alec.
In a desperate attempt to win Paul back and to patch her faltering self esteem, Olivia is on a mission to figure out just what made Annie so magical and irresistible. In doing so, she not only learns about Annie, but about herself, Paul, and what really matters in life.
The characters are rich with emotion and depth. Diane Chamberlain is a master story teller and the plot is expertly developed and clever. The story touches on so many lessons in love and life that is absolutely a book worth reading.
I listened to the audioverison narrated by Arielle DeLisle. Arielle did an excellent job expressing the voices and emotions of the characters in the novel. Her dialogue and narration were crisp and clear. This book is excellent in audio!
