Unable to resist the infuriating yet alluring Levi, Allie finds herself at the center of a supernatural society and forced to decide between following the path she has always trusted and saving a city that might just save her.
Allie's Dad is a very well off business man with diverse business interests. After buying a hotel in New Orleans, he invites his daughter and her best friend to work at the hotel for the summer before college starts. Eager for an adventure and a change in scenery, Allie and Jess head out to New Orleans. Allie's just gotten over a break up and despite swearing off guys for the summer, Allie and Jess are almost immediately intertwined with a group of guys who think the girls are too pretty to be exploring the city on their own.
Jess is a complete flirt, so despite Allie's attempts to ditch the guys, she ends up needing to stick around for her best friend. Levi, a tall handsome guy who all the other girls are drooling over only has eyes for Allie. Despite her very direct attempts to rebuff his interests, he is persistent. And the more she gets to know Levi, the more Allie is tempted to continue to spend time with him.
New Orleans is not what it appears to be on the surface. Below the normal facade is an underworld of creatures that control the night, and also protect the city or wish to cause it harm. The underworld is carefully controlled by ruling families, and Levi is their future leader. What begins as an innocent romance quickly turns into something much greater as the impact of their relationship threatens Allie's safety and the well being of the city.
This young adult romance is clean, easy to read, and entertaining. The characters are relatively one dimensional without a lot of depth in this first novel. The chemistry also isn't really there yet - while there is an attraction between Allie and Levi, Allie very blatantly keeps telling him "no" which he doesn't take for an answer. The pushiness of the hero and some of his tactics leave much to be desired. The novel ends mid stream, but this is just the beginning to a series which will hopefully tie up some of the loose ends.
Amy Rubinate narrated this novel and did a really good job. The reading was clear and didn't take away from the story.
