I lived in a haze for those four years after the accident. Catering to her every need, even though she hated the very sight of my face. I tried to hold on to her and the future that we were supposed to build together. But you can’t hold on to someone that doesn’t exist anymore.
It wasn’t until I met Jesse Addison, a barista at the local coffee shop, that I realized I didn’t just lose Sarah that tragic night, I lost myself as well. Jesse taught me how to let go of the past and learn to love again. But what happens when your past haunts your present and the woman you used to love refuses to accept the woman you can’t live without?
**Intended for readers 18+. Each book in this series can be read as a standalone.**
Changing Course is emotionally demanding, and I felt highs and lows throughout Brett’s story.
Brett met the center of his life, Sarah, and spent seven years loving her and planning the perfect life for the two of them. With an amazing woman and his career as a detective, he had everything he had ever wanted, until a horrific accident tore his life apart. The accident may have left Sarah alive, but definitely stole the woman Brett loved. Trying desperately to hold together a marriage to a woman who despises him, Brett is living his life attempting to find the woman he once knew as his wife.
Four years after the devastating night that changed Brett’s life, he meets Jessie at a local coffee shop and realizes he not only lost Sarah in the accident, but he lost himself as well. Changing Course is Brett’s story.
I found myself in knots while listening to Aly Martinez’s incredibly detailed, emotionally fuelled, story of love and loss. One aspect of the story I partially enjoyed was the progression of time in Changing Course. We really got to see the life Brett and Sarah built together from the beginning of their relationship. I felt a connection to Sarah, and loved her relationship with Brett. I was heartbroken after the accident, and truly felt Brett’s loss. I understood his need to hold on to the beautiful broken Sarah, so when Jessie entered the picture I had mixed feelings. I actually did not like her in the beginning, but as the story progressed I began to enjoy her character. She is fun, sweet, smart, and relatable. She fit perfectly with the sexy but broken detective. The details throughout the book really played a strong role in making Changing Course stand out as an astounding story, and are presented in a way that was not overwhelming. I really felt connections to each character, and had a clear picture each setting they spent time in. Although Changing Course is emotionally heavy in parts, I found myself smiling and even laughing out loud in several parts of the book. Aly Martinez truly knows how to take you on an emotional journey.
Christian Fox is a remarkable narrator. He conveys his character’s in such a way you can’t help but fall in love. His voice is strong, clear, and a pleasure to listen to. He was a perfect fit to give Brett’s point of view. Lucy Rivers is a strong narrator, she knows how to adjust her voice to clearly showcase her character’s emotions, and does a marvelous job of bringing them to life. She did a good job with Jessie’s point of view. I really enjoyed this audio book, and would recommend it to anyone who loves to get swept away by an emotional story.
